In years past, one of my routine New Year’s resolutions has been to quit swearing so much.
But this year I say the hell with New Year’s resolutions. I’m tossing out this annual exercise of self-criticism cloaked in self-improvement and opting instead to congratulate myself on some of things I’ve got going for me. I’m loved. I’m a productive member of society. I have a great son and a terrific husband. I’m an American. I mix a mean Manhattan. My dog is always glad to see me.
Sure, I could exercise more and eat less. I could call my friends more often, go to church every Sunday, read all the foreign policy articles in The New Yorker, and quit sweating the small stuff.
But this year, I’m going to focus on what I’m doing right, and just try to do a little more of it.
What are you doing for New Year’s?

I’d like to try one of your Manhattans!
I like this philosophy. Given the “state of the nation,” etc., I’ve had my full of negativity. I’ve actually boycotted the newspaper the past few days of my vacation break and decided to focus on spending time with my family and renting all those movies on video that I missed this past year on the big screen. … Maybe I’ll even embrace that comment by my husband that the extra five pounds I gained this past year have made me “more shapely.” And add butter to my popcorn.
Happy New Year to all!
Even though I can never keep dieting and exercise resolutions, they are not without some benefit. For instance, I have an elliptical machine from a past year’s resolution — it makes a perfect coat rack. I have some hand weights that I use to keep a door propped open. I used one of the many reference books I’ve received from Weight Watchers as a shim to keep my kitchen table from wobbling. I’ve come to realize that for me, New Year’s resolutions are not about success or failure, but instead are about resolving to try. And if those attempts go south, make the best of it. As they say, “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade.”
Uh oh! I think I smell a resolution in there… “I’m going to focus on what I’m doing right, and just try to do a little more of it”
